Our students need to make a very difficult transition, from being dependent learners to becoming independent learners. They need to move from a reliance on us as the source of all knowledge and wisdom towards taking responsibility for their own learning. But it can also be a difficult transition for us as teachers! We need to learn to let go and allow our learners more independence.

13.30-14.30    Teresa Doguelli ‘Grammar on the Rocks, Skills on the Beach’
In natural language, it is difficult to imagine a speaker who does not listen or a writer who does not read.  Equally fruitless is a learner of English who knows the grammar and vocabulary but does not possess the skills to use either in communication. This session will address how all the separate components of language learning should be integrated so as to create genuine communication.

14.30-15.30    Steve Taylore-Knowles ‘Exploring Life Skills with Open Mind’
‘Open Mind’ is an innovative multi-level series for young adults from Macmillan. In addition to solid language skills, grammar skills and vocabulary skills development, the series has a unique life skills strand, which gives students the key skills they need for their professional, academic and social lives. This presentation from one of the lead authors explores how the materials work and how life skills are developed over the series in meaningful, practical ways.
